How It All Comes Together
Advocacy. Coaching. Housing.
Being a single parent while pursuing your education can be challenging. But you don't have to do it alone. Our community of students and staff are here to support you every step of the way. Together, we can help you achieve your goals and create a brighter future for you and your family.
Scholar House works alongside single parents each week to provide family services, academic coaching, life skills training, financial coaching, and housing in order to support a single parent during their journey to graduate from an accredited college or certified apprenticeship program.
SCHOLAR HOUSE IS
Support.
About Heartland Scholar House
Heartland Scholar House opened in January 2022, as the primary Indiana affiliate of Family Scholar House in Louisville, Kentucky. Family Scholar House was born from Project Women, an organization originally established in 1995 by representatives of six orders of nuns. What began with only four families is now a recognized national best practice program headquartered in Louisville, KY, serving more than 30,000 people annually and focused on education as a primary path for ending the cycle of inherited poverty.
Scholar House Works
Our outcomes speak for themselves. Participants have a 91% completion rate. Three months after leaving the program, 70% of participants no longer require public assistance. This is especially impactful considering our families experienced poverty, homelessness, and domestic violence.
SCHOLAR HOUSE IS
Community.
Scholar House Locations
Heartland Scholar House launched its first location in Anderson, Indiana in January of 2022. Anderson Scholar House is a former student housing building purchased from Anderson University, and converted into two-bedroom family apartments. Newly renovated with all appliances included, the campus has its own fully fenced in playground, assigned parking, high speed internet, and building security measures for added safety.
In 2024, Heartland announced the launch of Muncie Scholar House. Muncie Scholar House has partnered with Ball State University to provide housing at the Scheidler student apartment complex on the corner of Tillotson and McGalliard. Our partnership allows Muncie Scholar House to offer housing to student parents and their children in the program.
Also in 2024, Heartland launched Marion Scholar House. Thanks to the community of Marion and Grant County coming together to fast-track a Scholar House launch in 2024, Marion Scholar House was not only able to start programming and work with families, but also to offer housing. The Marion Housing Authority became a contracted partner to provide family housing in a neighborhood specially designated for student-parent families with Scholar House.
